When I was a kid, I lived with my mom and we didn’t have MTV. My dad would tape the music videos for me so I could watch them when I got home. Rhythm Nation was my dance class. My parents couldn’t afford to take me to dance class, which I don’t think would’ve mattered cause they weren’t teaching hip hop at the time. I ended up learning every single Janet Jackson music video dance from the tapes my dad made for me. From the dances I learned, I was able to create my own routines. The most memorable dance I choreographed was for the varsity cheerleading team I was on in 1995. We competed in the dance portion of our summer cheer camp. My dance, the one I choreographed, from the movements to where people were standing, one first place. One of the girls remembered my dance and taught it to the 1998 cheer team. They competed at the cheer summer camp, and won first place.
My first dance class was not until I moved to NY in 2002. I took classes in jazz and ballet for 2 years. The last 2 years I moved my focus to hip hop and breakdancing. Hip hop is in my blood. It’s like a second language to me. I found a great school to take classes in San Francisco called City Dance. I LOVE the Funkanometry/hip hop classes.
I went to Vegas this last weekend to watch the International Hip Hop Dance competition. The divisions were (USA and World):
Junior Hip Hop
Varsity Hip Hop
Adult Hip Hop
The competition was incredibly impressive. The juniors brought the hip hop dance just as hard as the varsity and adult teams. The finals included performances by Beat Freaks and FannyPak (America’s Best Dance Crew). The event also featured workshop classes taught by well-known choreographers. I took classes with Shane Sparks (America’s Best Dance Crew judge) and Marty Kudelka (Justin Timberlake’s choreographer).
Here are some videos from the show. Enjoy!
